No 20th-century composer explored, channelled, and reflected the American landscape as effectively as Aaron Copland, a son of Lithuanian immigrants who was raised above a department store in Brooklyn. A musical training in Paris would lay the foundations for the most popular works he wrote on his return to the States: the gloriously uplifting [i]Fanfare for the Common Man[/i] (1942) and 1934's folk-derived [i]El Salón México[/i], which earned the composer worldwide recognition.
