Comment:

In the '80s, R&B got its slick on, with synthesizers, talkboxes, and quiet storms igniting the sound's rebirth for a whole new generation — updated, tailored, and completely modern. Start with the drumbeat that would rocket "She Drives Me Crazy" to the top of the charts, tack on a helium-trip warble from "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly," mix in Larry Blackmon's nasty twang, and dress it all up in a red truss. The result? The biggest hit of Cameo's career — the damn funky "Word Up!" While Billy Ocean would go on to international stardom and spin out hits like a one-man factory, he never sounded more stylishly chic than on his first #1 hit, "Caribbean Queen (No More Love On the Run)" — and the GRAMMY® voters agreed, presenting him the award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance in 1985. And long before Zapp and Roger laid the foundation for G-funk, they were lighting up the charts with the smoothed-out talkbox tastiness of "Computer Love." From "Lean On Me" to "Baby Come to Me," from "Nasty" to "Thriller," we've got megabytes of megahits right at your fingertips.
