Johnny Clegg
Comment:
You can hear the fruits of Clegg's apprenticeship with street musician Mntonganazo Mzila on his first two albums: Universal Men (1979), an exploration of the experience of South Africa's migrant workers (among whose number belonged cohort Sipho Mchunu), and the groundbreaking African Litany (1981), which gave us the entrancing "Heart of the Dancer." Further down the line, we find his 2006 solo release, One Life, featuring "Thamela" (translation "Warm Yourself in the Sun") which saw Clegg draw on Afrikaans lyrics for the first time.
