Johnny Clegg
Comment:
Born in northern England, raised in South Africa during the apartheid-era, and nicknamed Le Zulu Blanc — The White Zulu — in France, where he commands a massive and loyal following, Johnny Clegg laid his colors at the fluid crossroads where Western folk and pop meet African styles and musical structures. While his cabaret singer mom may have bequeathed him his entertainer genes, it was his crime-reporter step-dad who exposed him to the culture of South African townships at an early age, and former gardener Sipho Mchunu who taught him Zulu guitar methods and ultimately brought about the formation of his first band, Juluka (the Zulu word for "sweat"). Our overview of the inspiring, unifying Clegg canon includes his many anthems, most notably the tune he penned for Nelson Mandela, "Asimbonanga."
