Comment:

From alt rock to classic rock, neo-soul to disco, hardly a style of music hasn't been touched — no, make that swept away — by the sounds of Philadelphia. Lots of folks think Philly International birthed disco, and producers Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers clearly tore a page from Gamble & Huff's playbook, drenching Chic's dance-floor anthem "Le Freak" in le sleek strings and positively buttery vocals. O'Jays singer Eddie Levert literally gave birth to a second generation of Philly soulsters, as sons Gerald and Sean took both the family name and its Courvoisier-smooth vocal flair for Levert's "(Pop Pop Pop) Goes My Mind." Ex-Tony! Toni! Toné! singer Raphael Saadiq goes real old-school with the Delfonics-ized sound of the Philly Groove Orchestra behind his sweet-talkin' retro ballad "Oh Girl." And the Philly feel isn't just locked into the R&B groove, as Welsh indie rockers Super Furry Animals prove in their stylistic tribute to the Stylistics, "The Gift That Keeps Giving." From L.A. to London, from John Legend to the Bee Gees, we've got all the best from Philly Soul's most distinguished devotees.
