The Stills
Comment:
Montreal's 2009 Juno-winning indie heroes the Stills — for Best New Group and Best Alternative Album, Oceans Will Rise — have come a long way in their nine years together, and you can trace the band's musical progression right here. The tight, bright "Killer Bees" (2003) belongs to their staunchly post-punk early phase, which produced excellent debut album Logic Will Break Your Heart, a politically charged affair (check out "Lola Stars and Stripes") that took some of its musical cues from the Cure and the Smiths (there's definitely a pinch of Johnny Marr in the guitar on "Love and Death"). Without Feathers (2005) brought on a leaning towards heartland rock, while the aforementioned Oceans Will Rise (2008) allied eco-themes to driving, anthemic energy . . . Tim Fletcher's vocal on "Being Here" has a power and tone that has reminded many of Bono.
