Comment:

This is the story about The Kid and his perilous drug life! A rock opera as rock solid as any other pretentious bullshit.

Opening with the prologue "One" (included because the song was once ridiculously rumored to be about pot, but hey, a drug wastoid's life tale fits the number as well), our hero discovers the hidden pleasures of illicit substances through storybook tales as a child ("Poppies"). As he becomes older, he hooks up with his buddies and enters the fashionable world of booze ("Nightclub Jitters"). Of course, getting blasted the first time is always super fun, and Foreigner's hot rockin' tune "FEELS LIKE THE FIRST TIME" blasts from the nightclub's speakers. It strikes a chord within The Kid.

Soon, our hero turns to booze for escapism ("Thank You For Making Me Feel...Better"), while mom and dad nag him about his new found interests, while at the same time insisting on their own vices ("Cancer"). Meanwhile, The Kid's not listening to any of their two-faced advice and hooks up with the local drug dealers ("Kid Charlemagne", "Captain Jack") and turns into a complete pothead before you know it. He even sings a song about his love for the devil weed ("Sweet Leaf")!

And of course, from there, things only escalate. The Kid's folks warned him that pot was a "gateway drug", and the next thing you know, our hero is tripping on some serious acid ("White Rabbit"). Damn, could mom and dad be right?!

The Kid starts to lose touch with reality through his acid worship and becomes insular, trying new thrills like speed and working himself into a quick fit of depression ("How Do You Think It Feels"). He goes deeper, looking for more, escaping into the seedy underbelly of the city, getting hooked on smack, and ultimately coming up with no answers at all ("Heroin").

Throughout all this debauchery, The Kid has found a girl ("My Drug Buddy"), but she offers no help as she's just as messed up as he is. She winds up dying of an OD ("Heaven Tonight"), while he combats the loss by nearly offing himself on some China White ("For Your Life"). He is left shattered, now lost in a hazy world where reality is only based on getting the next fix and nothing more ("Drugs").

But then, as luck would have it, some small time thug connections lead The Kid into a profitable life of committing petty crimes and getting to spend his nights in Las Vegas where the hookers are as attractive as the neon lights ("Little Criminals"). It is during this thieving binge that The Kid sees the light and decides to give up the drugs and become a full time small time crook. He has one final toke ("Last Dance With Mary Jane") and rides off into the Nevada Sunset.

The bottom line? Songs about drugs make for nifty fake rock operas that are cool to share with your online pals!

Nice mix. Oddly, one of the 1970s' greatest session guitarists, Larry Carlton, played on two adjacent tracks here -- Kid Charlemagne and Captain Jack.

You have WAAAAYYY too much time on your hands... and that's a great thing! The mix is good, the story is awesome, the concept is bezoomnily fab. Get Baz Luhrman to direct and I'll be the second in line to buy a ticket.
