Comment:

Several years ago, a friend requested an all Motown tape for her 30th birthday. Even back then, I was pretty burnt on Motown, and sick of some numnutz coming up to the stereo at parties hollering 'Motown!' as if it were the only officially sanctioned dance music. Anyway, I made the tape, and tried to mix in a few less obvious faves while ignoring certain played out hits (i.e. 'Stop! In the Name of Love'). Of course, with Motown, 'played out' is only a matter of degree. This is from before the CD reissue boom brought out all sorts of Motown rarities and vault items, which haven't bowled me over neither. Motown may be the most overrated label until Sub Pop (ooh! -- fighting words). Give me good ol' Atlantic, Stax or, gasp, Invictus any day. Here's the best I could do.
