Comment:
The last volume of my anthology in which I mix all the artists in my collection in alphabetical order. This one really hits its stride around Track 5. It was a neat experiment, forcing me to figure out interesting ways to make transitions between bands that sound nothing alike, and got me to consider using some artists and songs more often that I've pretty much ignored til now. However, while I like most of these artists (I did buy their music, of course), I found it was pretty much impossible to maintain a consistant mood or flow throughout the mixes when I didn't have any control over the order of artists. Anyway, now that you've seen them all, you can let me know if you think any artists are missing from my collection based on the ones I own. I'm always adding more... if I had made this mix a week later, for instance, bands like Les Savy Fav, AM/FM, The Motorhomes, The Wicked Farleys, Aden and Marbles would've been included. *************************************************(ARTISTS ADDED TO MY COLLECTION SINCE MAKING THIS MIX: Tahiti 80, that dog, The Wicked Farleys, Shannon Wright.)Feedback:
I like this mix best out of all of them. That's probably because I know more of the bands here, but that's irrelevant. Good nonetheless.
I know a few less artists on this one, but I like what I do know here. The one glaring, horrible omission is Tom Waits. His later work is the most innovative: hard for me to pick a favorite but 'Rain Dogs', 'Swordfishtrombone', and 'Bone Machine' are great. His early stuff is more bluesy/jazzy, very moody stuff-- 'Heart of Saturday Night' is my favorite from that period. I also suggest X ("Los Angeles"), Velvet Underground (any), and, if you're daring, Wesley Willis. Anyhow, I appreciated the unique method you used to share your CD collection with us. I'll certainly have a look at some of the bands you list that I don't know. Take care!
A final question: did you include various artist compilations or soundtracks on these mixes? Just curious.
Oh yeah, I know I need some Velvet Underground. I might just go ahead and buy the box set one day. Waits' I've always meant to look into and still haven't. I still know him more from Jim Jarmusch movies and such. Umm... I didn't include any artists whose music I only had on compilations or soundtracks, that just wasn't the nature of this experiment, though like I had mentioned, the Nirvana track I used did come from the No Alternative album. And, really, thanks for taking the time to give me some really interesting suggestions.
Nice series Patrick. Like the Zumpano, Yo La Tengo and TBS on this one. Some bands that I like not represented here are XTC, Unrest, Throwing Muses and the Wedding Present. Definitely check out some late 60s psychedelic music, since I see you like several of the Elephant 6 bands (Minders, Beulah, etc.) who emulate that sound. The Nuggets 2 box set would be a great place to start.
Oh yeah, and once you get tired of listening to the Nuggets set, send it to me...;)
Ha ha, I think if I spend 50 bucks on music, it'll be staying in my collection.
