Comment:
A big chunk of Stephen Merritt. I avoided the usual chronological approach, trying to mix up his styles and guest vocalists.Feedback:
Stephen Merritt is an absolute genius. One of my very favorite people in music today, for sure. You posting this today *is* very strange, as I was just listening to my version of this ("I'm afraid of the dark without you close to me"--one of my very best single-artist comps, without a doubt) on the way to work this morning.
Outstanding mix for a tremendously creative force!
Um...this is truly freaky, because I was listening to "Holiday" in the car on the way to work this morning. Unfortunately, this CD seems to be mnissing ALL of my favorites: "The Sun Goes Down And The World Goes Dancing," "The Village In The Morning," "The Trouble I've Been Looking For," "All You Ever Do Is Walk Away," "Strange Powers"...and I'd probably have to include most of the FBH album, as it's in my top ten of all time. When I complete my Merritt collection I'm going to attempt my own sampler.
Oh, I'd also include "Busby Berkeley Dreams" and "I Don't Believe In The Sun."
Ditto valis and Mr. Conroy. Nice work man.
Nice! I have a hard time appreciating Stephen Merritt's voice, so I've always had a preference for the songs he handed over to a female vocalist. "The Saddest Story Ever Told" lives up to its title.
Confining the number of great Stephin Merritt songs to an amount that will fit on a single disc is damn near impossible, but there's very little here that I wouldn't agree with ("In My Car" I never quite "got") and you nailed quite a few of my all-time personal favorites ("You Love to Fail" deserves to be counted an early classic)... Commendable job.
