Comment:

When Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd was released last year many folks hemmed and hawed about what should and shouldn't have been on there. This is my attempt to create a companion piece to Echoes: TBoPF.

I chose "If: The Rest of Pink Floyd" as a title mainly because *if* the band were to release yet another compilation best-of, this is quite possibly what it might look like. I did my best to follow in the footsteps of Echoes and put songs together in hopes that they segue well, possibly with the help of a little studio magic. I do not have the audio tools to do such a thing, but a little imagination goes a long way in adding to the enjoyment of this mix of eclectic tunes.

All of the songs on this collection can be found on their respective Pink Floyd albums, except Pigs on the Wing (8-Track version) which can be found on the Snowy White compilation "Goldtop". Song selection, as would be expected, was incredibly difficult. I chose a song based not on my personal feelings toward the track but rather on what I had seen folks request to be on Echoes:TBoPF, songs that still get frequent radio airplay, songs from albums that weren't represented on Echoes, songs the band had played frequently in concert, and/or songs that fit well with other tracks.

Originally I had nearly 40 songs picked out that I felt could be included. I had several Barrett-era compositions picked out, including Apples and Oranges, The Scarecrow, Lucifer Sam, and a couple others, but eventually they were all dropped, leaving Interstellar Overdrive as the only Syd-era song on this set. Some may cry hearsay, but I'd argue that the worthy Syd songs from the era were all put on Echoes, as they should have been. I also had Crumbling Land and Unknown Song from Zabriskie Point, but they just didn't fit anywhere, so the Zabriskie material is the only Floyd album (not technically an album, obviously, but a big part of their history) not represented.

Songs I had picked out but didn't put on the set: The Scarecrow, It Would Be So Nice, Apples and Oranges, Point Me at the Sky, A Saucerful of Secrets, Julia Dream, Narrow Way (part 3), The Nile Song, On the Run, Childhood's End, Atom Heart Mother, and San Tropez. Feel free to let me know what you think I've should have kept, dropped, rearranged, etc.

FYI- disc times are

Disc 1: 77:32
Disc 2: 76:14

I admire your attempt... That there's enough great PF stuff that didn't make the cut speaks volumes for the consistancy of the band... That some of your choices give me pause is to be expected; a lot of the stuff that made it onto 'Echoes' had me scratching my head as well... Great to see "Dogs" on here... Could have done without "Pigs (3 Different Ones)"...

Oh what the hell: Here are the personal favorites that I would have liked to have seen: Nobody Home, Stay, Goodbye Blue Sky, Nile Song, Several Species of Small Furry Animals..., Remember a Day, The Final Cut, What Shall We Do Now?, Paint Box, and The Gold It's In the...

Nice job though ;-)

Good work. This does, in fact, just about compensate for the relatively disappointing official selection.

This is good stuff. I like the inclusion of Free Four and Have A Cigar.
