Roots & Influences - The World of Neil Young
Comment:
It's no surprise that one of rock's greatest artists is a composite of all his heroes. But as much as we'll hear from the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis, Jimmy Reed, the Rolling Stones, and other legends, some of Neil's biggest influences came from much closer to his Toronto home. Like the Guess Who, who rode a frat-friendly garage-rock remake of Johnny Kidd's "Shakin' All Over" to Top 40 stardom; leader Randy Bachman became Young's lifelong friend, and the Guess Who was the first band ever to cover a Neil Young tune. You may not immediately connect the baroque psychedelica of the Rockets' "Won't You Say You'll Stay" with Neil . . . until you discover that the band morphed into Crazy Horse. Future Buffalo Springfield/CSN&Y co-founder Stephen Stills gets his folk on in "High Flying Bird" as part of a nine-member unit called the Au Go-Go Singers, which once headlined a gig featuring Neil's band the Squires. And speaking of Neil's early bands, you gotta hear "Go On and Cry," the recently unearthed 1966 single by the Mynah Birds, which featured not only future Buffalo Springfield bassist Bruce Palmer, but — this'll blow your mind — Rick James. From Bob Dylan to Bobby Darin, from Elvis Presley to Pete Seeger, we've got the essential artists, the crucial cuts that made Neil Young Neil Young.
