Comment:

Some of the Soldier Songs on our list reference the Civil War — Kathy Mattea’s “The Southern Soldier Boy,” for example — while others were inspired by the conflict in Vietnam (“I Should Be Proud” by Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, “My Son, John” by Tom Paxton), but Elton Britt’s “There’s a Star Spangled Banner Waving Somewhere” has a timeless feel, even though it became a hit in 1942, at the height of WWII. Finally, Dave Dudley, the master of the country trucker anthem, tackles soldier/protester conflict with dignity in “What We’re Fighting For.”
