Comment:

The millennium went out with a bang, not a whimper, giving us more pop music possibilities than ever before. Fact is, a single Study Guide couldn't capture them all, so we had to dip in for a second helping. A troupe of musical anarchists with the unlikely name of Chumbawamba fused Alice Nutter's angel-sugar vocals with a soccer-stadium yabbo chorus in the dance-friendly frenzy of their rabble-rousing anthem "Tubthumping." Speaking of angels, the film City of Angels boosted Buffalo's the Goo Goo Dolls to stardom, waltzing them — literally —to the top of the charts with a soul-baring saga of star-crossed love, "Iris." Not since Buddy Holly had an artist turned the corner from horn-rimmed geek into fashion chic, but Lilith lovely Lisa Loeb makes an even more mind-boggling leap — as the only unsigned artist ever to top the charts — with the bittersweet tenderness of "Stay (I Missed You)," featured in the film Reality Bites. And no decade would be complete without a nutty dance craze, so Los del Río fills the quota with the arm-crossing, hiney-slapping — and totally infectious — "Macarena." From "Achy Breaky Heart" to "Whoomp! There It Is," we've got a decade's worth of your favorite artists right at your fingertips.
