This is a sampling of the MERZBOX, a 50-CD career retrospective of the Japanese noise musician Merzbow. Merzbow, AKA Masami Akita, has been around since 1979, creating at a phenomenal rate, churning out 100s of albums. All of his records advance his fundamental goal: the complete destruction and re-imagination of musicality. This mix (part 1 of 2) traces the first half of his career, from his early experiments with tape loop and John Cage-inspired prepared instruments to his later rhythm-based noise assaults.
