In the wake of bop’s jagged jolts and hair-raising honks, cool jazz eased off the pedal and ignited a quiet revolution. A smooth, sophisticated breeze drifting through a late-night lounge, the scene was spearheaded by Miles Davis’ game-changing [i]Birth of the Cool[/i], but found some of its finest expressions in Chet Baker, Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan . . . white artists steeped in black culture who proved not only that the West Coast was planting the seeds of integration, but that black music is a universal thing.
