Deep in the ’70s, the golden grooves of California soul shed some pounds of bounce, their crackles and pops [i]glistening[/i] with a sun-dappled sparkle. That lush, laid-back glow lives inside the crushed-velvet symphonies of Barry White, the summer sway of Bill Withers’ “Lovely Day,” and the woozy cruisin’ of War’s “Low Rider.” Come to think of it, even Motown shifted gears after heading out West, with Smokey, Stevie, and Marvin trading the Motor City’s might for a piece of that L.A. plush.
