Stax
Comment:
It was called Soulsville U.S.A. for a reason. The grit to Motown’s polish, Stax Records was soul served up without the frills — both real and real Southern. In the ’60s, the label graced us with Otis Redding before changing the game entirely with Isaac Hayes, as he transformed from house songwriter (“Soul Man,” “Hold On, I’m Coming”) into Black Moses. Before long, Stax had evolved into a symbol of Black Pride, the sound of the struggle . . . the meaning of soul itself.
