Legacy - The World of Depeche Mode
Comment:
The final page of Depeche Mode's legacy is still far from written. After all, they're still playing at the top of their game, and musicians who have yet to cut a track — or even press a key — will sing their praises (not to mention their songs) for decades to come. The Killers' Brandon Flowers says DM's influence affected him profoundly "before I ever thought of myself as a musician," and you can hear the trademark Depechean tussle between the luminous and gloominess in the sinister sparkle of "Smile Like You Mean It." DJ fashionistas Ladytron ride the crest of a new wave of New Wave — mixed with an icy blast of electroclash — in Velocifero's "Predict the Day." Linkin Park vocalist Chester Bennington tears a page — no, make that a lung — from the Dave Gahan playbook in the sonic slam of "Crawling." And Nine Inch Nails scavenge through a synth-slathered fever dream of industro-goth in "The Perfect Drug," featured in David Lynch's film Lost Highway. But don't stop there; from Moby to Marilyn Manson, from Smashing Pumpkins to MGMT, we've got all of DM's musical devotees, disciples, and descendents right here.
