If you've ever seen the word [i]remix[/i] next to a pop song title, you've got Depeche Mode to thank. Sure, dub and disco pioneers discovered the delights of retooling songs from the inside out, but DM have a way with melding art and commerce into a seamless . . . remix. If the album version of "Barrel of a Gun" throbs with the edgy agita of a crank holiday in hell, then "Barrel of a Gun (Underworld Soft Mix)" Club Meds it out, an Ibiza breeze by comparison. Labelmates Goldfrapp tech, tweak, and torque "A Pain That I'm Used To (Goldfrapp Remix)" into a bohemian rhapsody of vocal complexity, while "Happiest Girl (The Pulsating Orbital Vocal Mix)" strips the song down to its essentials: vocals and beats, with a little synth for spice. And how do you improve a song that [i]Q[/i]magazine rates one of the 100 best ever? Just listen to the dance floor-ready pulsation of "Personal Jesus (Boys Noize Classic)" and you'll have your answer.
