Norman Brown
Comment:
Born in Shreveport, LA, raised in Kansas City, and schooled in Los Angeles (at the Musician's Institute), Norman Brown emerged in the '90s as one of the most scintillating contemporary smooth jazz guitarists, an artist who ventured boldly into territory once owned by George Benson and forged astonishing new paths of his own. He began his career on Motown's jazz label, Mo Jazz, in 1992 with Just Between Us (title track included here), before marking the new millennium with a run of excellent pop-crossover albums for Warner Bros. — and with 2004's West Coast Coolin' he proved he was no slouch in the vocals department (check out "Angel"). Our Essentials charts Brown's progression through to 2007's Stay With Me, which saw a return to basics — jazz edges out pop for the most part, even if a track like "You Keep Lifting Me Higher" offers a warm blanket of easy-to-love vocals by Nikkole.
