Comment:
When Willie Nelson speaks, we listen, and he said, "With his recording of 'I Can't Stop Loving You,' Ray Charles did more for country music than any other artist." Consider this: Not only was Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music the only #1 album Ray released during his lifetime; it was also the first country album of the modern era ever to top the Pop chart. Charles busts down the wall separating Nashville from New York City in the countrypolitan lushness of "I Can't Stop Loving You," winning a GRAMMY® — for R&B, no less — in the process. Ray drains a bittersweet brew of regret and relief to its dregs, following it with a soul chaser, in "You Don't Know Me." And, finally, he teams up with fellow legend (and fan) Willie Nelson for an epic badlands mini-drama, "Seven Spanish Angels." But there's more: from the freight-train ferociousness of "Blue Moon of Kentucky" to the blue-flame fervor of "Ring of Fire," Ray Charles made country music like no one else ever had . . . or ever will.
