Comment:

Brilliant though he was, Ray was just one among a galaxy of stars. Call him what you will, the leader of the Rat Pack or the Chairman of the Board; Frank Sinatra was the undisputed heavyweight king of 20th-century pop, and his platinum-plated pipes purr like a Ferrari engine at idle in the bittersweet splendor of "When Your Lover Has Gone." If anyone could challenge Ray's claim to soul's paternity, it's Sam Cooke, and the haunting optimism of "A Change Is Gonna Come" (released just days after Cooke's untimely death), spoke so strongly to a generation of civil rights struggle that it was featured at the Obama inauguration concert. Bold and brassy as the band backing her up, Ray's smoky-voiced labelmate Ruth Brown makes not just lemonade, but a five-course gourmet feast out of the lemons life's handed her in the sassy, Duke Ellington-penned showstopper "I'm Just a Lucky So and So." From B.B. King and Nat "King" Cole to Etta James and James Carr, we've got the artists who shared the spotlight, and the airwaves, with the soul-defining superstar.
