Comment:
When Lupe Fiasco announced his retirement plans in early 2008, every hip-hop head within earshot thought, Aren't you just getting started? After all, we're talking about a rapper who rolled onto the scene a few years earlier, weaving his way through a horn-stabbed Kanye West track ("Touch the Sky") and a smoky single about skateboarding ("Kick, Push"). Soon after, Fiasco justified his Jay-Z endorsement — Jigga man called the Chicago native a "breath of fresh air" — with a universally acclaimed debut, 2006's Food & Liquor, and a string-soaked Jill Scott duet ("Daydreamin'") that sampled Tchaikovsky and grabbed a GRAMMY®. As if that weren't enough reason to listen to Fiasco's career unfold, The Cool went the concept-album route and left the charts smoldering. All because of its restless beats and tightly woven storyline, from the heaven-sent hook of "Superstar" to the throwback boom-bap breaks of "Paris, Tokyo" and "Gold Watch." Now pick that mic up, Lu; you've got a job to do.
