Comment:

It's a little early to tell exactly what the Dave Matthews Band's ultimate impact will be — after all, they're still playing at the top of their game — but early returns sound pretty impressive. Frequent DMB producer John Alagia brings a loose-limbed, organic vibe, creating the perfect setting for John Mayer's bluesy sincerity in "Waiting On the World to Change," from the adult-alternative superstar's double-GRAMMY®-winning Continuum. Like Matthews & Co., O.A.R. (short for Of A Revolution) built their rep as a must-see band from the ground up, relentlessly touring colleges before breaking into the bigs. Producer (and ex-Talking Head) Jerry Harrison reins in the group's jammy tendencies for a laser-beam focus in the more-Goo-Goo-y, less-Phish-y "Heard the World." And Matthews put his money where his taste is, co-founding ATO Records and signing the likes of alt-rock critical faves My Morning Jacket, whose reverb-drenched, psychedreamic "Gideon" exhibits their debt to Neil Young's — not to mention DMB's — sonic expansiveness. But don't stop there; from Jack Johnson to Jason Mraz, from David Gray to Damien Rice, Matthews' musical offspring are colonizing the post-indie, post-alt, post- post-modern world . . . and we've got 'em all right here.
