Originals - The World of Dave Matthews Band
Comment:
It's difficult, if not impossible, to make these stone-cold classics any better, but, somehow, the Dave Matthews Band has made them their own. Which is all the more insane when you consider all the artists who have covered Bob Dylan's two-and-a-half-minute slice of apocalyptic prophesy, "All Along the Watchtower" (among them Hendrix, U2, Neil Young, Prince, Pearl Jam, and the Grateful Dead). And yet, the undeniable, almost spooky power of Dylan's original summons us back again and again. Occasional Dylan collaborator Daniel Lanois reveals roots as thick and tangled as a mangrove swamp in Acadie's hymnlike psalm of soul-baring confession, "The Maker." On the sunnier side, Sly & The Family Stone wah-wah their way into a little hot fun in the summertime with their chart-topping chunk of '70s funk, "Thank You (Falletin Me Be Mice Elf Agin)." And Neil Young's nine-minute epic display of ragged glory, "Down By the River," might as well be subtitled "the jam band's best friend." From Neil Diamond to the Zombies, the Dave Matthews Band has cherry-picked from pop music's greatest writers, and you can hear them — just like they did — right here.
