After building up cult status during legendary residences at Sydney's Unicorn Hotel and Civic Hotel in the late '70s, Mental As Anything exploded mischievously onto domestic charts just as Madness did in the U.K. . . . with a clever, catchy party-pop that never took itself seriously. A couple of songs on the soundtracks to two of the biggest '80s movies — [i]Crocodile Dundee[/i], featuring "Live It Up"; [i]Young Einstein[/i] (a cover of Chuck Berry's "Rock 'n Roll Music") — raised the Mentals' international standing, and showed the world what they could do. Although the O'Doherty brothers, Peter and Chris (a.k.a. Reg Mombassa) left the group in 1999 and 2000, respectively, to pursue successful careers as artists, the band has continued to "irritate the public with their highly listenable, idiosyncratic brand of garage pop," as their own Web site would have it.
