A true musical historian, Alex Chilton joyously processed the legendary and the obscure, from pop, blues, soul . . . you name it, putting it all back out into the world with that indescribable, off-kilter "Alex" touch. James & Bobby Purify's Southern soul sensation "I'm Your Puppet" was still fresh in folks' ears when the Box Tops covered it, but that didn't stop 16-year-old Chilton from coming off like a seen-it-all soul man on his band's punchy cover version. The zoot-suited sound of '40s Fats Waller hit "You's a Viper" gets jazzed up in a way no one could have envisioned when Chilton leans — and leers — into its night-life narrative. And while he may have cut 1958 Italian pop smash "Volare" with a wink, it's clear that he brought the same honest passion to it that he had for everything inside his overflowing, eclectic grab bag of tunes.
