Doris Day
Comment:
The big band/World War II era really put Day on the map: even though she was still a teenager, her voice made her sound older, in a sultry kind of way. After working with Barney Rapp (the man who suggested stage name Doris Day as a replacement for her birth name, Doris von Kappelhoff) she landed her first major gig in 1939 fronting the band led by Bob Crosby (brother of Bing), but caught the wider public's attention with Les Brown's outfit, thanks to knockout cuts like "You Won't Be Satisfied Until You Break My Heart."
