Comment:

Being in a band — especially one with only three moving parts — has certain built-in limitations, so it's no wonder that our lads occasionally step outside the band box to charge their batteries. Recorded in the very Superdome that serves as the home of the NFL's Saints, U2 & Green Day's post-Katrina cover of the Skids' "The Saints Are Coming (Live from New Orleans)," crackles with the dangerous intensity of a downed power line. And while U2 and Green Day are world-class road warriors, Pinhead Gunpowder (featuring Billie Joe moonlighting with other Bay Area punk stars) never leaves the garage, as they blowtorch through a dead-eyed view of a dead-end life in "27." And Green Day by any other name would be, well, Foxboro Hottubs, a barebones rock diversion helping to bridge the half-decade gap between rock operas American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown. In "Mother Mary," Green Day's alter-ego welds a Stooges-style slam dance to Katrina & The Waves-ish candy-pop. From their collaboration with Iggy Pop to the Network and the Frustrators, we've got all the music Green Day was busy making . . . when they weren't busy being Green Day.
