Comment:

Jazz is all about changes and improvisation, and while Blue Note's founders might not recognize today's version of the label they started, they'd definitely be proud of its success, both financially and artistically. For example, take nine-time GRAMMY® winner Norah Jones, as she strips Hank Williams' achy-breaky ballad "Cold Cold Heart" of its hillbilly heritage and drops it into the soft blue spotlight of a smoke-filled club. Saxman Joe Lovano blows a mean tenor straight out of the Trane playbook in his supple cover of Oliver Nelson's "Six and Four," skating along the outside edge of the tune's melodic groove without straying totally off the reservation. And if you ever wondered how to get the sound of a top-down, breeze-in-your-hair summer joyride onto tape, check out longtime Lovano cohort John Scofield's gently swinging "Don't Shoot the Messenger," cool as a watermelon slice on a sweltering July afternoon. But don't stop there — from Cassandra Wilson to Stanley Jordan, from Bobby McFerrin to Charlie Hunter, we've got the artists of today who are building Blue Note's reputation for tomorrow . . . and decades to come.
