Thurston Moore
Comment:
Sonic Youth mainstay Thurston Moore recorded his debut solo album in 1994, the same year he and wife Kim Gordon (also in Sonic Youth) had their first child, which may explain the leaning towards pop and away from dissonance on Psychic Hearts . . . the tracks "Ono Soul" and "Patti Smith Math Scratch" attach musical hero references to lively toe-tapping melodies, quite the leap for an artist who placed himself at rock's avant-garde by doing atonal things with guitars that tend to frighten children. Check out "101% / Threpton" — a collaboration with Blur's Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon — if you really want to take your head for a spin, before returning to his second song-based solo outing, Trees Outside the Academy (2007): the acoustic track "Honest James," a duet with Christina Carter from Charalambides, boasts his habitual off-kilter tunings but may fairly be described as gorgeous.
