Used to be that children's music was made for kids and kids alone, back in the days when it wasn't really portable. But as cassettes and CDs (and iPods) began invading the common living space, boomers and Gen X'ers decided to reformulate kids' music they way they'd retooled pop: D.I.Y. Suddenly, artists like the Del Fuegos' Dan Zanes and They Might Be Giants had completely reinvented themselves as pre-tween music gurus; still more (including LL Cool J, Los Lobos, the Shins, and the Barenaked Ladies) jumped into the fray part-time, either for their own tots or because it's just plain [i]fun[/i]. So we've put together a six-decade sampling of all the sounds that will make your little one grin without putting a big rainy face on Mom or Dad.
