Comment:

No other group in the world has been awarded a Congressional Record from the United States House of Representatives, saluting contributions to music, but Fourplay can add that particular distinction to their many honors. Five of the outfit's ten studio albums — up to 2008's Energy — have made it to the top of Billboard's Contemporary Jazz Albums chart where, incidentally, their 1991 self-titled debut was ensconced for a full 33 weeks. There's no mystery about the band's success once you've had a look at the lineup: at the start of the '90s founder member Bob James pulled in the services of sticksman Harvey Mason (who had worked with Herbie Hancock and James Brown) and bassist/vocalist Nathan East (a familiar session face for Barry White and Eric Clapton), with Larry Carlton (Billy Joel, Quincy Jones) rounding out the current formation. It all adds up to smooth-jazz heaven.
