Sugar Ray
Comment:
It's an old story — band steps out of its comfort zone to try something new and scores a smash, only to wind up a one-hit wonder when they can't sustain the success. It was the fate that seemed to lay in wait for Sugar Ray when it switched up from Orange County party-metal to reggae-tinted sunshine pop. But the band surprised everyone but themselves by respecting the hit ('97's solar-powered sensation "Fly") and following it up with a steady string of charters that stretched on into the 21st century. Our Sugar Ray Essentials reaches back to the band's rowdy rock beginnings ("Mean Machine," "Make Room"), then ambles on through the signature hits — "Falls Apart," "Answer the Phone," "When It's Over" — to their end-of-the-aughts output, including the cozily familiar, surefire smiler "Girls Were Made to Love."
