The power chords that propel Polvo's back catalog are so battered and bruised, you'd think the band's guitars are out of tune [i]all the time[/i]. Not quite. Polvo's just a pitch-imperfect example of math-rock done right — music that messes with your head like a maze full of funhouse mirrors and smoke machines. In other words, complex but catchy stuff, whether it's led by a lumbering rhythm section ("Fast Canoe," "Feather of Forgiveness") or ravenous riffs that'll leave your ears ringing straight into next week ("Thermal Treasure," "Can I Ride"). Not to mention all the exotic flourishes — the Middle Eastern melody of "Vibracobra," the Indian-infused drone tones of "The Fighting Kites" — that set the outfit apart from such noise cadets as Sonic Youth. No wonder why so many indie rock vets rejoiced when Polvo announced their reunion in 2008, more than a decade after their last album, [i]Shapes[/i], and not a moment too soon.
