Comment:

for the same recipient of the "all bridges lead south (au revoir nyc)" mix who skipped town earlier this year to louisiana. we were down to new orleans in early august to visit, and this is meant to be 1/2 birthday mix 1/2 audio postcard. at the very least i wanted to conjure up something that touched on all the eclectic styles associated with the crescent city: jazz [dixie to bop to free], blues, funk, cuban, calypso, cajun, haitian, blah etc blah etc blah. truly one of those self-educational mixes. the charlie parker is included as a tip of the hat to the street sax player who belted out a pretty inspired version of this on request, the big maybelle track an ode to the unbelievable torrential downpours we were subjected to almost every day, lucinda williams because she + her husband actually reside in lake charles. i also flip-flopped on including the kidd jordan, but be damned those who don't like skronky jazz - he's an criminally underdocumented legend + professor at southern u. and this is one of his more accessbile moments, so he stayed.

Laissez les bon temps roulez!!! (Lake Charles..? You mean "Pond du Chuck"..?) Nice mix Lakespeed! Torrential downpours just give ya' an excuse to stay in the bar longer....watching it pound the streets....

A guy from Ohio w/a Welsh name speaking French? At least he has good taste in music ;-) This does look great. Made me think of "Crescent City" by Branford Marsalis, actually. Valis, should that be "Croissant City?"

Way cool. Love that Nawlins music!! Maybe we should talk trade sometime.... Hey, I didn't hear Lucinda got married; last I heard she was living in Nashville (by way of Austin). Boy, that girl gets around.

Brilliant. And kudos for including Kidd Jordan, all jazz was "skronky" at one time. I'd love to trade for this if I have anything of interest to you. Le' me know.

very very interesting. i meant to go to lousiana this summer on a bombass roadtrip with two fellows (a jew and a huegenot) but sadly vans were destroyed, girlfriends acquired, and money was at a stand-still. i got to hawaii, but i would have loved to see new orleans. anyway, this looks nice.

Alright, I love the Dixie Cups track, and you can't possibly go wrong with The Meters. Everyone should see them live as many times as possible...I've been blown away by their sheer funkiness every time. Wanna trade for this? Drop me an email.

I love making mixes for trips to specific cities, and I also visited N.O. this summer. My mix included the original version of "Baby Please Don't Go" by T-Bone Walker; "Doctor Jazz" by Squeeze, which includes references to Professor Longhair and Jelly Roll Morton; "Bourbon Street Parade" by Wynton Marsalis; "Bloodletting" by Concrete Blonde, and a few others that escape memory (I don't have the tape in front of me.) I've made other mixes for trips to New York, Chicago and Los Angeles...I like to listen to them while I run.
