Comment:

Santana built his career on breaking stereotypes, so it's no surprise that some of the pop world's most adventurous artists — in all genres — follow his lead. It's pretty easy to trace the three-decade line that stretches from Santana in S.F. to Ozomatli in L.A., but while rock was el rey back in the day, Ozomatli fuses their salsa-fied jazz-funk to a hip-hop foundation in "(Who Discovered) America?" When you first hear Maná lead singer Fher Olvera cutting loose on "Oye Mi Amor," you might think Sting, but its rockin' rhythm section has Santana etched in every fat bass groove. And make no mistake: Santana's reach absolutely transcends borders, languages, and styles, as the native Minneapolitan genius occasionally known as Prince proves from the second he digs his spurs into the guitar solo on "Purple Rain." From the six-string pyrotechnics of Joe Satriani to the Tex-Mex conjunto of Los Lonely Boys — and more — four decades of artists have turned to San Francisco's #1 shaman for some supernatural inspiration.
