Originals - World of Santana
Comment:
You might recognize some of these tracks from your favorite Santana albums and setlists, but you really need to hear them the way Carlos first did — before he made them his own. It's not for nothing that they called Tito Puente El Rey (The King) as his "Oye Como Va" cha-cha-chas its way into the very fabric of Latin music, heavy on congas and timbales, with just a touch of flute, the mint sprig in the song's mojito mix. Former Tito Puente sideman Willie Bobo ratchets up the steam heat in the soul-jazz of "Evil Ways," moseying along through his girlfriend's "to-don't" list like an alligator just itching to snap. And a bluesy, pre-Stevie Nicks Fleetwood Mac lays down a 12-ton voodoo beat behind "Black Magic Woman," written by mad Mac guitar hero Peter Green, whose leads slash through the song like a machete through a mangrove swamp. From John Coltrane to Chuck Berry, from Cat Stevens to Marvin Gaye, these are the artists who played the songs Carlos couldn't wait to wrap his guitar around.
