Similar Sounds - World of Santana
Comment:
When you've got a band with its own special brew of rock, blues, jazz, Latin, and world music, you can bet its "Similar Sounds" may not sound a lot like one another . . . but they all sound like Santana. Fact is, our featured selections all not only share musical influences and members, but one of 'em even shares Carlos Santana's DNA. When you hear the laid-back Latin funk of Malo's "Suavecito," you might think you were hearing Santana —and you'd be partly right, because Malo was founded by Carlos' brother Jorge. Two former Santanans, Neil Schon and Gregg Rolie, left most of the Latin behind — and amped up the jazz and rock — for Journey's prog-fusion instrumental masterpiece "Topaz." And ex-Miles Davis sideman John McLaughlin took the fusion concept thermonuclear in Mahavishnu Orchestra's "Open Country Joy," with bluegrass, jazz, and massive rock all pressure-fit into four blistering minutes. As you'll discover, Santana's peers and pals can be found all over the map, both musically and geographically — from Creedence Clearwater Revival to Steve Miller and more — but we'll help you bring 'em all together.
