Comment:

Frank Sinatra had one immense talent but many ways of expressing it — there was the idealistic young crooner, the finger-poppin' swinger, and, perhaps most memorable of all, the insomniac heartbreaker who looked at the world through a half-empty glass of whiskey, and reminded us that he didn't just understand our pain — he lived it, just like we did. Romances-gone-south, bouts of blackness . . . oh, yes, he had a few, and we loved him for it. In fact, Sinatra did nothing to shatter the romance of the hard-living renegade by making a triumphant return to the recording business at Capitol in the early '50s, at a time when he stood at a career crossroads, and the pristine velvet of his youthful voice had been scuffed — from then on, it was the careworn raggedness round the edges of his notes that helped him connect so directly to the beat-down romantic who dwells in all of us. Here, he hangs his tears out to dry, right alongside ours.
