Comment:
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania..... the name does not generally conjure up images of rock and/or roll. When I first moved here some 15 years ago, I was really shocked at just how many damned there are - certainly more than the status of clubs could accomodate. Sadly, it hasn't been a thriving unified scene in some time - probably not since the 80s since such bands as Carsickness, Half-life, the Wake and the 5 (who'll be on volume 2, once I get some tape/vinyl transers completed). There are still many good bands, but it is a rough town to play if you travel from afar. I've thrown in a few regional bands as well to give a sense of tri-state flavor. My 3 Scum are from Erie, the Infidels and Boogieman Smash are from eastern Ohio, and Pollen have long since relocated to Arizona (and subsequently broken up). Two 60s garage acts (Swamp Rats, Arondies) are represented and a few of the bands on this disc are still gigging or recording. Long live the (one-time) Steel city! Visit scenic Pittsburgh, .... and bring some good rock n roll clubs with you. (In the spirit of honesty, I personally played on tracks 10 and 22).Feedback:
i have no idea what this sounds like but i would like to listen to it right here and now.
this looks like loads of fun - good theme too. Some of my favorite bands were local Houston, TX bands, but Houston like Pittsburgh is not generally a launching pad for musical success. Good job!
Ulf Samuelson is he familiar to you? or are the Penguins of no intrest ? looks cool even if i haven't heard any of it i think
Indeed it is a rough town to play in. I am sure a good number of these bands have had the "pleasure" having a gun branished on them by the owner of The Electric Banana. Proving Pittsburg has more than just Donnie Iris. Toss this one into my pile sometime.
Haven't heard much of this stuff but it certainly looks intriguing. I was in Pittsburgh for a weekend once, didn't know much about the music scene at the time, but I did go up and down on the incline railways and made it to the science centre.
Made to be enjoyed whilst drinkin' an Iron City beer....,or Yeungling (seemed to be the beer o' choice every time I invade the Three River city.) Great mix Sean! I'm interested in track #13.., besides yours. ;)
Looks great Sean! Maybe you'll inspire me to finally finish that SF mix! =)
Hey I'm from Pittsburgh and think the idea behind this mix is awesome! I'm actually attending Pitt right now, so to see a mix from this area is cool! The only thing that could've made it better is the Buzz Poets. They're a great Pittsburgh band! Although I'm glad to see a Clarks song on there too. :) Check out my mixes, I have a clarks song on one of them I think :)
Looks interesting.
Looks like a fun mix, even though I only know about 1 band - the Cynics - and only because my boyfriend took a road trip with them a few years back.
Nice work! did you ever play with Nixon's Head, oh wait, they're from Philly....
Very cool Sean. Almost makes me want to move there -- I said almost.
Looks great, Seanald. Thanks for the Donut People (now renamed the Amusement Parks) nod. ;-) I'd sure like a copy of this. And Sue: didn't I ever send you a copy of my "Gazing upon the navel" mix? If so, the Donut song is track 1.
This looks great, Sean. I need a copy. Great work
I'm in the dark on much of this too, but I'm always on the lookout for hometown mixes for further sonic enlightenment.
Sean, this looks cool. I'd love a copy of this next time we do a trade. Always nice to know what's been going on on the other side of the state.
Thanks, kids. Let's see,... Nixon's Head. No, I don't think I played with them, though I'm sure I've played with someone from that band. There were many great bands from Philly as well - Electric Love Muffin, Napalm Sunday, Rolling Hayseeds, Wishniaks, and more. Some of my fave performance memories are from the Khyber Pass. As for the ELectric Banana - I don't have as many bad feelings about the joint as I used to. It's a fancy Italian restaurant now, with good food I'm told. Same owners. Maybe that's why I can't bring myself to eat there.
someone enlighten me to the tale of the electric banana
Sean may be best to explain the Electric Banana and its "notorious" gun branishing owner. Yours truly got to experiance that with two separate bands(neither of which I was in, just a pal hitting the road with friends). Of course, the owner of The Four G's in Bethlehem, PA was equally as "charming" on occasions as well. As for Philly and Khyber Pass, it still exists. They have upgraded the bathrooms (they still are pretty bad but you no longer have to swim in the pool of piss. Many a great performance see there. Nixon's Head has reformed and the folks behind that band have put out a nifty tribute to Stiff Records featuring the likes of Matthew Sweet, Amy Rigby, Bill Lloyd, The Bigger Lovers, The Lowe Beats (Young Fresh Fellows offshoot), Frisbie, Photon Band, Ian Gomm, The Trolleyvox, Clive Gregson (Any Trouble), Huw Gower (The Records), Bobby and Robin Sutliff, Nixon's Head, The Anderson Council, Janas Hoyt & The Mary Janes, Dawn Eden, and much more. The Love Muffin disbanded and Rich of that band formed the alt-country combo Hayseeds, which split as well and he has a solo thing going. Gerry from Napalm Sunday has his own solo thing going that also has Y'alternative leanings. Guitarist Andy Wishniak put together a swell power pop combo called Trollyvox.
Just stumbled across your mix. As a fellow Pittsburgher, I agree that Pittsburgh has one of the better music scenes out there. Nice work!
