Phoenix
Comment:
While it might seem like Phoenix took flight overnight — all thanks to the pitch-perfect indie pop of Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix — they actually started as a garage band in the late '90s. Well, a garage band that sees nothing wrong with covering Hank Williams and Prince. A byproduct of being in the same synth-slinging scene as Daft Punk and Air, Phoenix's proper debut, United, delivered mirror-ball melodies ("If I Ever Feel Better") and high-gloss rock with a Bee Gees bent ("On Fire"). While some of that sheen's remained on Phoenix's other work (the galloping grooves of "Lisztomania," the fuzz-flecked keys of "1901," the brazen beats of "Everything Is Everything"), It's Never Been Like That actually sounds like a laid-back Strokes album. Which means two things: Phoenix is just about impossible to pin down, and there's gotta be something strange in Versailles' wine supply.
