Similar Sounds - The World of Pearl Jam
Comment:
While Pearl Jam has put their footprint unbelievably deep into the alt-rock landscape, the revolution wasn't theirs alone. Shortsighted critics initially (and unfairly) wrote off Stone Temple Pilots as Pearl Jam clones, thanks in part to Scott Weiland's leather-lunged growl and their grunge-by-way-of-L.A. avalanche of sound, hammered home in the epic sweep of "Plush." Somewhat miraculously, Bush managed to sidestep Britpop entirely, instead embracing their made-in-the-U.S.A. angst via the corroded elegance of modern-rock power ballad "Glycerine." And just as Britpop's two top guns, Oasis and Blur, were cast in the press as grudge-match enemies, critics — yes, those critics again — faced off Nirvana vs. Pearl Jam in the Battle for Seattle. In "Come As You Are," Cobain & co. launch a fuzz bomb of misfit anguish at a wobbly wall of feedback and still manage to navigate the tightrope between psych-out and sell-out. From Soundgarden to the Foo Fighters, we've got the bands that shared Pearl Jam's stage and airwaves.
