Comment:
Formed in 1978, disbanded in 1993, and reformed in 2009, Public Image Ltd. is the band that proves there's far more to John Lydon than the Sex Pistols. Rooted through its first albums in the heavy, serpentine bass of Jah Wobble (one of Lydon's childhood friends), and pioneering in its explorations of dub, hip-hop and techno (nods of respect would follow from Primal Scream, Massive Attack and others), PiL gave Lydon a creative freedom never possible within the confines of punk. In fact, any attempt at pigeon-holing PiL's output runs counter to its very nature so, in place of critical analysis, our best advice to you would be to press play and see where the music takes you. Recommended, however, are side-winder "Rise", ear-bleeder "Low Life", dub-creeper "Careering" . . . and Lydon's vocal on "Death Disco", which has been compared by the singer himself to "a bag of cats being slung down a staircase".
