Tinariwen
Comment:
Most world music bands tend not to stray from their own highly specialised sonic neighbourhoods, but that's not the case with Tinariwen — a collective of rebellious Tuareg musicians from the Saharan regions of northern Mali with an instinctive connection to Western blues traditions despite few overt links . . . that's why they felt like such a natural fit (rather than an exotic diversion) at Glastonbury in 2009. Although formed 30 years earlier in 1979, the band broke through to a wider audience in the early 2000s by merging aspects world music and rock with seductive tribal grooves, to produce an exotic version of the blues that rolls across the mind's more open horizons, and has similarities with North American traditions despite coming to life in African isolation. Here, you'll find a selection of Tinariwen's many highlights to date, including several excellent tracks ("Tahult In", "Lulla") from fourth album Imidiwan, recorded in the desert village of Tessalit.
