Don't be fooled by the backwoods trappings — rising alt country star Dawn Landes is no hayseed. Her travels have taken her from home-state Kentucky to Paris, where she lived for a while, and Brooklyn, where she records . . . so there's no shortage of cosmopolitan savvy beneath the rustic charm. Take a track like "Little Miss Holiday", which imagines a conversation between Jodie Foster and the character (a young prostitute) she plays in Martin Scorsese's movie, [i]Taxi Driver[/i], wrapping it up in ethereal harmonies and delicately picked strings. We're also rather partial to her fabulous cover of Peter Bjorn and John's "Young Folks" — performed with a group of bluegrassin' old folks from Texas, the WST Band — and "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" which offers only a sideways nod to the classic Byrds album, and is actually an original composition inspired by tales she'd heard of a bull-riding runaway from the Great Depression era.
