In Deep Cuts, we're digging up some [i]real[/i] oddities whose roots extend into three very different musical traditions. Who needs a military march when you can roll out a central European dance step? Yes, right in that weird intersection where Welk and Yankovic meet up with Williams and Sousa, you'll find the University of Iowa's "Hawkeye Victory Polka." Meanwhile, the University of Virginia Cavaliers turn to rock showman Gary Glitter's "Rock and Roll, Pt. 2" as the root for its "Virginia Count Down to Cav Man." And finally, the actual "Wabash Cannonball" never got any closer to Kansas State than St. Louis, MO, but the school adopted it as its theme when the folk song's sheet music was the only survivor of the music department's devastating 1968 fire. The thinking was that if the [i]song[/i] could beat such slim odds, so could the school's teams.
