While 1999 had its fair share of breakout stars (everyone from Monica to Eve to an absolute madman named Eminem), the millennium's parting shot is also remembered as a major turning point for many hip-hop/R&B staples. Lauryn Hill, for one, moved more than ten million copies of her delicately layered solo debut, [i]The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill[/i]. Success left the singer/MC sprinting from the spotlight though. On the other hand, TLC bounced back from a five-year break with such triumphant tracks as "No Scrubs" and "Unpretty" — smash hits that helped their [i]Fan Mail[/i] full-length earn eight GRAMMY® nods. And then there was Will Smith, savoring every second of yet another career peak, helped in no small part by the sun-baked hooks of "Miami" and the Kool Moe Dee chorus of "Wild Wild West."
