Comment:

In Deep Cuts, we move from the Nevilles' more spiritual pursuits to an earthier sort of love, but we'll ease into it gently with a track that weds the two spheres in the elegant style of a long-gone era. By our count, the band lays out only nine of "The Ten Commandments of Love," but it's still a stone-cold gorgeous slice of doo-wop worthy of the Platters, Penguins, or Moonglows, complete with a basso profundo spoken outro. Somewhere in the space between the brooding irony of Leonard Cohen's "Send In the Clowns" and the paisley daydream of Jimmy Webb's "MacArthur Park," you'll find the bittersweet love song "Arianne," so perfectly tailored to Aaron Neville's voice that it's nearly impossible to imagine anyone else even attempting it. And if you didn't know that the next-to-youngest Neville idolized Nat King Cole, you really need to check out his version of "Mona Lisa," just to compare Neville's manna-throated homage to the late crooner.
